Well, it seems to me that people want to be able to include their image in an HTML document these days, so PDF isn't very friendly for that. GIF/JPEG/PNG would probably be ideal for that use, but SVG is probably easier to build, and would probably be good enough.
But honestly, I'm not sure I'd have a huge use for this, so I don't think you should over-react to my opinion....:)

how about SVG?
To produce SVG as an alternative to PDF has been planned from start, but at the moment there is nothing more to it than that.
If you are seriously interested in this feature, I would seriously consider not postponing the implementation any further.
